Subject: National Latino Peace Officer's Association
I was referred to your organization by your member, Officer David Martinez, for possible
assistance. I have been in contact with a Latino family living in my precinct that is in need of
assistance. The family lives <Censored>.. It is a single mother, <Censored> with three small
children, Benjamin (6), Zackariah (4) and Eliajiah (2). When I first contacted this family, it was on
a welfare check of the mother who was very distraught.
Upon our arrival, Ms. Trujillo was crying and visibly upset. As a single mother, she had
very little. The apartment was fairly bare with minimal furnishings. After a check of the
cupboards, it was obvious she needed more assistance than just laundry soap. My fellow officers
and I bought the family groceries, including the much needed laundry soap. I also gave Ms.
Trujillo information on how to apply for much needed assistance.
Upon returning from vacation, I received a letter from Ms. Trujillo thanking us for the
assistance. However, in that letter, she also stated that the children would not be celebrating
Christmas this year as she could not afford it, although she has great hopes for next year. I only
wish that I would have received the letter sooner.
I stopped by the residence this evening. Ms. Trujillo was in good spirits and the children
of course always appear happy even though they truly have very little. I confirmed that she had
groceries and wasn’t in need of any immediate necessities. I then asked her what they
needed. She stated that she desperately needed clothes for the kids and tennis shoes. Never
once did she ask for toys for the children or anything for herself. I told the children that Santa did
not forget them, he was just waiting for me to help him. Prepared to provide these children with a
Christmas, I told them I was going to see Santa and would be back in a couple of days.
Later, while speaking with Officer. Martinez about this family, he suggested possible
assistance from your organization. The love the children have for their mother is obvious, even
though these children have very little. I truly believe Ms. Trujillo is trying to provide for her
children as best she can. She advised on today’s visit that the children will be starting daycare
next week and she has enrolled for an educational course to teach her the skills to get a job.
Any assistance the organization can offer I know would be greatly appreciated by the
Trujillo family.
